Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and selfrespect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized as “honor” helps you create this life of good feelings.

Here's an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.

Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item.If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk's mistake,we would drive home with a sense of sneaky (偷偷摸摸的) excitement.Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand,if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul.

Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness?

In the first case, where we don't tell the clerk,a couple of things would happen.Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the progress,we would lose some peace of mind and selfrespect. We would also demonstrate (证明) that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk's attention causes different things to happen.Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable.Upon leaving the store,we feel honorable and our selfrespect is increased.Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility.

There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions.Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions.Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it's easy to think and act honorably again when we're happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it's started,it's easy to continue.Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.

16.According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our ________.

  A.selfrespect

  B.financial rewards

  C.advertising ability

  D. friendly relationship

17.The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to ________.

  A.lying

  B.stealing

  C.cheating

  D. advertising

18.The phrase “bringing the error to the clerk's attention” (in Para.5) means ________.

A.telling the truth to the clerk

  B.offering advice to the clerk

C.asking the clerk to be more attentive

  D. reminding the clerk of the charged item

19.How will we feel if we let the clerk know her mistake?

  A.We'll be very excited.

  B.We'll feel unfortunate.

C.We'll have a sense of honor.

  D. We'll feel sorry for the clerk.

20.Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?

  A.How to Live Truthfully.

  B.Importance of Peacefulness.

  C.Ways of Gaining Selfrespect.

  D. Happiness through Honorable Actions.

Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact,it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.

The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type.It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situation—for example, family problem, the death of a loved one,or moving to a new place.Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness,it usually does not last for more than a year.

The third kind of loneliness is the most severe.Unlike the second type, chronic(the opposite of “temporary”)usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause.People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and becoming close to others.Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.

Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person's social contacts, for example, friends, family members, coworkers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. For instance, our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lonely people may have many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their popularity.

Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness as heart disease, while temporary and situational loneliness can be a sad,and sometimes dangerous condition.

  Ⅰ.1.A keep sb. company意为 “陪伴某人”。

apart from 脱离开;in addition to 除了……之外;because of 由于;except for 除……

此句中all her time是逻辑主语,time与devote之间是被动关系,构成devote all her time to doing...

in turn表示“转而,反过来,依次,轮流地”;in particular表示 “尤其,特别”;in advance表示 “在前头,预先,事先”;in short表示“简而言之,总之”。

  9.A

可以把句子语序调整为“But believe it or not,I still remember the story _______we got lost on a rainy day”,这样就容易判断出“________ we got lost on a rainy day”是解释story的具体内容,是同位语从句,不是定语从句,可以排除A和D。

本句语序不是正常语序,状语从句插入到动词help之后,不容易判断,正常语序是“She couldn't help _______ at the strange clothes her friend was wearing even though she tried not to”,这样就容易判断了,can't help doing sth.“情不自禁做某事”,故选C。

16.A 由第五段倒数第二句 “Upon leaving the store,we feel honorable and our selfrespect is increased.”

17.B 由第五段第二句“Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief.”

19.C 由第三段最后一句“We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul.”

  Ⅲ.21.loneliness 22.temporary 23.requires/needs
